The Port-Cartier History Interpretation Center opened its doors in its new location in June 2016 to present visitors with an annual exhibition on the history of the municipality formerly known as Shelter Bay.

Located for a year now in the former Baptist church of Port-Cartier on Portage-des-Mousses Boulevard, the Port-Cartier History Interpretation Center is not in its first year. Previously located for 16 years in the basement of the Sacré-Cœur church, the museum chose to have a street-front presence to more easily attract new visitors.

Beyond the Dream

The center presents you with a panoramic exhibition organized by the historical society of the city of Port-Cartier, founded in 1915 and named Shelter Bay. The exhibition, rich in photographs titled "Beyond a Dream," tells you more than 100 years of history and paints a representative picture of the North Shore at the beginning of the 20th century. Discover the early stages of a municipality that will become the third largest city in the North Shore; an active city turned towards nature.

The museum is open from June to September every day from 9 am to 6 pm, admission is free, and the museum is presented to you by experienced interpretive guides.

"For those discovering Port-Cartier and the North Shore, this is a must-visit. Even my partner, who was a Port-Cartier resident for 15 years, loved his visit!

The history of Port-Cartier and its surroundings is very rich in adventures, anecdotes, and history with the colors of the region. Our guide Guylaine accompanied us for a very pleasant and entertaining visit." Carole F., Joliette
